# Networking follow-up templates

Pick the situation, fill in a few details, and get a follow-up that sounds like a person wrote it. Every template comes in a short and a fuller version, and nothing is sent anywhere.

## How to use the templates

Choose the situation on the left and the version you prefer. Only the fields that template needs are shown. Anything left empty appears in the preview as a highlighted [placeholder] so you can spot it, and optional sentences, such as "here is the link I mentioned", simply drop out until you fill them in. Copy the result, or open it as a draft in your own email app.

## What makes a follow-up land

- **Send it soon.** The same week, while the conversation is fresh for both of you.
- **Mention one real detail.** Something they said shows you were listening and helps them place you.
- **Ask for one small, specific thing.** "A 20-minute call next week" is easier to say yes to than "let's stay in touch".
- **Make "no" easy.** A line that lets them decline politely makes a reply more likely, not less.

Following up with someone whose company you have only just heard of? Before you click links in their reply, [WebTraceCheck's free DNS and domain lookup](https://webtracecheck.com/dns-lookup) shows how the domain behind their email and website is set up.

## Questions

**Can I edit the wording?**

Yes. Copy the text into your email app and change anything you like; the templates are a starting point. They were written for this site, so you are free to use them.

**Are my details saved?**

The fields are kept in your browser's local storage so they are still there if you come back. Nothing is uploaded. Use Clear fields to remove them.

**How long should a follow-up be?**

Usually shorter than you think. Pick the Short version for a first follow-up and the Fuller one when you owe a proper thank-you or have more to share.
